Anthropic launched Claude Opus 5 on July 24, 2026 and positioned it as a practical high-end model rather than a moonshot flagship. The company says it delivers a major jump over Opus 4.8, approaches Fable 5 on difficult work, and does it at about half the cost.

Anthropic's release notes focus on coding, agentic workflows, knowledge work, and scientific analysis. The broader message is that model vendors are now fighting on efficiency as much as raw capability. Price-to-performance matters a lot when customers are trying to move from experiments to regular usage.

That makes Opus 5 a good example of where the model market is heading. Frontier performance still matters, but strong everyday economics matter almost as much.

Why it matters: the next model race is about dependable production value, not just having the biggest headline score.
