OpenAI published a new report on July 27, 2026 arguing that AI is not just speeding up existing work, but changing who does which work inside companies. Looking at more than 800,000 messages from U.S. ChatGPT users, the company says a large share of occupation-specific AI use now crosses into tasks traditionally associated with other jobs.
The practical takeaway is easy to see. A marketer can troubleshoot a website without waiting on engineering. A salesperson can do first-pass data analysis. A small-business owner can draft legal or finance-adjacent material without immediately handing the work off. That does not mean specialists disappear, but it does mean day-to-day work is getting more fluid.
OpenAI also said the pattern is strongest in smaller organizations, where people are more likely to solve the problem in front of them instead of routing it to another department. That makes this story less about abstract future automation and more about how work is already reorganizing in real teams.
Why it matters: this is one of the clearer signs that AI adoption is shifting from “productivity boost” language into actual job redesign.
